Thornton Academy, founded in 1811, is a co-educational, independent boarding and day school serving grades 6 through 12, it is located on Maine's southern coast in the city of Saco.

Building on a tradition of strong college-preparatory programming, Thornton's academic approach encourages creative and critical thinking and self-discovery through comprehensive core offerings in English, math, history, science, fine arts and wellness as well.

Thornton’s historic 80-acre campus is located near some of the finest beaches, ski mountains, scenic areas, and cultural offerings in New England. It is about 90-minute drive from Boston, and 15 minutes from Portland, a vibrant, small city with a working waterfront.

Arts & New Media Center

The advanced technology provides the tools for courses such as Music Technology, Game Design Development, Technical Writing in an iPad World, and Video Production.

STEM Center

The state-of-the-art STEM Center includes four biology and chemistry laboratories, and one engineering lab. It allows the school to strengthen and expand its regular and AP curriculums.

The center features ceiling mounted cord reels, ample fume hoods, Apple TVs, movable tables and chairs, demonstration stations, teacher prep rooms and daylighting support inquiry-based learning.

Media Center

It features the TATV television studio, and hosts classes in computer programming, multimedia production, journalism, and video game programming.

Tennis

The Thornton Academy boys tennis program is currently one of the most accomplished in Class A. In the past eight seasons, the squad has advanced to the regional semifinal round or beyond in the Maine Principals’ Association state team playoffs.

Tennis capital of Maine

Saco is considered the high school tennis capital of Maine. Tennis is the oldest sport at Thornton Academy and dates to the last decade of the nineteenth century. In the spring of 1893, the school offered an intramural girls tennis program, the first sport sponsored by Thornton Academy.

The food is also great, the school offers a salad bar, hot soups, and a cultural dish every day.

Saco, the town

Saco is a very safe and family friendly town, it is a small, quiet and scenic Maine oceanfront community.

The town is surrounded by nature and is a 25 minute drive (I-95) away from downtown Portland. Mountains are within an hour for those interested in skiing, ten minutes away from Maine's beautiful beaches.
